AFL NOTES: In DaShane Dennis, the Dallas Desperados acquired a rising talent at defensive back when the team signed him on November 1, 2007 to help complete the defensive backfield. As an added bonus, the team also inherited a dangerous kick returner, as Dennis proved last season when he finished with the third-most return yards in the AFL (1,282). For his career, Dennis has totaled 199.5 tackles, 23 pass breakups, 10 interceptions- with two returned for touchdowns- four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He has also excelled as a kickoff returner with 2,190 yards (21.1 avg.) and six kickoffs returned for touchdowns, and has shown his skills as a receiver when called upon, catching 39 passes for 429 yards (11.0 avg.) with eight touchdowns.
AFL 2007 (Kansas City/New York): Dennis began the season with the Brigade where he played in five games, tallying 32.5 tackles and three pass breakups. He was traded back to New York on April 12 for Vontrell Jamison, where he concluded the season with the Dragons, posting 45.5 tackles, two interceptions and four pass breakups. He also added five receptions for 76 yards and one touchdown and ranked third in the AFL with 58 kickoffs for 1,282 yards and three touchdowns with New York. Dennis opened the season with four tackles against Chicago (3/4). At Colorado (3/10), he made 7.5 tackles then tallied a season-best 9.5 tackles against Dallas (3/16). He had five tackles against Arizona (3/30). At Las Vegas (4/8) Dennis made 6.5 tackles before he was traded to New York on April 12. In his first game with the Dragons, Dennis made 4.5 tackles against Colorado (4/15). He made his first interception of the season at Philadelphia (5/14), along with 1.5 tackles. Dennis tallied 6.5 tackles against Kansas City (5/20). He picked off his second pass of the season at New Orleans (5/28) to go along with seven tackles. Dennis had six tackles against Austin (6/2) and again at Dallas (6/16).
AFL 2006 (New York): In 15 games, Dennis led the team with 83.0 tackles while also tying for the team-lead in interceptions with seven for 87 yards and two touchdowns. He also posted one fumble recovery, one forced fumble and 12 pass breakups. On special teams, he recorded 17 kickoff returns for 276 yards with a long of 38 yards, three field goal returns for 75 yards with a long of 47 yards and recording a touchdown. On offense, he recorded 10 receptions for 124 yards and one touchdown. Dennis opened the season with 8.5 tackles, one interception and five kickoff returns for 100 yards against Nashville (1/28). At Chicago (2/3) he tallied 4.5 tackles, a half tackle for loss and one interception. Dennis was named Defensive Player of the Game at Utah (2/11) after tallying a season-high 12 tackles. He was named Ironman of the Game against Orlando (2/26) after posting 3.5 tackles, one interception and two kickoff returns for 20 yards. Dennis compiled eight tackles, one interception and returned four kickoffs for 69 yards against Columbus (3/3). At Tampa Bay (3/18) he posted three tackles and one interception. Against Grand Rapids (4/1) Dennis had 9.5 tackles. Dennis made four tackles at Columbus (4/14) along with one interception. He was a candidate for Ironman of the Week at Los Angeles (4/23) after posting three tackles and one interception. Dennis tallied 8.5 tackles and forced a fumble to be named Defensive Player of the Game against Georgia (5/6).
AFL 2005 (New York): Dennis finished fifth on the team in tackles with 33.0 and offensively posted career highs in catches (23), yards (230) and receiving touchdowns (six). Dennis did not play in the first six games of the season. He made his Dragons debut at Austin (3/19) and recorded his first touchdown on an onside kick return while also adding three tackles. Dennis recorded his first career interception along with 5.5 tackles at Columbus (3/26). He made his first receiving touchdown at Los Angeles (4/10) while also contributing 4.5 tackles and a pass breakup. Dennis made a season-high seven tackles at Orlando (4/15). At Dallas (4/29) he had four tackles before finishing the season against Colorado (5/21) with three tackles and a season-best three pass breakups.
AFL 2004 (Philadelphia): Dennis played in three games with the Philadelphia Soul and registered seven tackles with one pass breakup and also recorded one reception for nine yards. Dennis made his AFL debut against Carolina (5/15) to the tune of two tackles and one pass breakup. He had four tackles at San Jose (5/22) before adding one tackle and his first career reception for nine yards at New York (5/4).
OTHER PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: 2003- Dennis played in 15 games for the Richmond Speed of the af2 and recorded 54.5 tackles and five interceptions.
COLLEGE: Dennis was a two-time first team all Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference selection in 1999 and 2000. He finished a four year career with 184 tackles, eight interceptions and 34 passes broken up.
PERSONAL: Dennis was a standout athlete at Concord High School in Wilmington, Del., where he played running back and defensive back in football. He also was on the school's track and field team where he won was a state championship in the 400 meters during his senior year.
